The Vendée is a very popular tourist destination! There's never a shortage of things to do with family or friends. For your holiday in the Vendée, you can choose to keep costs down by enjoying the beaches and free walks (there are plenty of free things to do!) or you can allocate part of your holiday budget to fun, cultural, artistic, or heritage visits – there's something for everyone! Here are the major tourist sites in the Vendée to discover as you explore the different areas.

Puy du Fou

We're not going to miss out on visiting one of the world's best theme parks. But a visit to Puy du Fou requires planning and organization, as it's best to book in advance, especially during peak season! A journey through time awaits, with numerous and grandiose shows to help you learn more about the history of the Vendée region. Costumes, hundreds of characters, animals… No rides, but a festival of scripted scenes to discover, guaranteed to dazzle everyone.

Tiffauges Castle

It is said that the castle of Tiffauges is the one at the origin of the legend of Bluebeard … One of the largest medieval sites in the region, with shows and entertainment in season.

Children love seeing the collection of medieval war machines, a veritable open-air arsenal where firing demonstrations plunge us into the heart of the Middle Ages. Between trebuchet firings and epic jousts, the ancient stones of Gilles de Rais's fortress suddenly seem to come alive before our eyes.

Talmont Castle

Between Les Sables d'Olonne and Jard-sur-Mer, this thousand -year-old castle, dating from the 11h century, is a very old medieval fortress to discover in order to immerse yourself in the past of the region.

A former defensive port where the ocean once battered the ramparts, the Château de Talmont, a listed historic monument, owes its fame to its illustrious owner: Richard the Lionheart. As you wander through the keep and underground passages, you can feel the power of this stronghold, which was one of the most important in the Bas-Poitou region. The thousand-year-old stones tell tales of conquests and coastal defences, offering a fascinating insight into medieval military architecture.

The castle comes alive during the summer season, becoming a theatre of adventure for all generations. From knightly shows to falconry demonstrations, History comes alive in the inner courtyard. Children will particularly enjoy the educational workshops and puzzle trails, which make this visit a fun and interactive experience, a far cry from traditional museums. A stopover with character that combines culture and entertainment in the open air.

Talmont Saint Hilaire Castle

Another must-see site in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire is the Aquarium de Vendée, a unique underwater exploration to experience all year round. With 60 aquariums, more than 5,000 marine animals and nearly 500 species, it presents you with the wonders of the seas and oceans from the European coast to the coral reef.

Miniature Vendée

In Bretignolles-sur-Mer, we absolutely love it; it's like stepping into a child's bedroom (a very meticulous child's bedroom, that is!). A magnificent museum that recreates scenes of Vendée life and iconic monuments in miniature: Vendée Miniature. A must-see for families, and even for adults, for a truly magical experience!

Each character, each cart and each brick is reproduced with surgical precision at a scale of 1/10th. You find yourself whispering so as not to wake this Vendée village of the 1920s, where you can almost hear the sound of the hammer on the anvil and the murmur of the river.

A stroll along the canals of the Green Venice

An unmissable experience, embark on a "flat-bottomed boat" and sail through the marshes, with explanations from a guide, about this environment which at first glance appears hostile, but which has been brilliantly tamed by Man for centuries.

A complete escape awaits you: the tender green of the duckweed, the discreet song of the kingfisher, and the light filtering through the leaves. An aquatic labyrinth where you can happily lose your bearings only to find yourself immersed in nature.

Visit to the Salt Marshes

In Saint-Hilaire de Riez, Noirmoutier, and other towns throughout the Vendée region, visit the salt marshes with a guide or salt workers ; it's an absolutely stunning and unique ecosystem. A way of life intertwined with breathtaking landscapes.

Under the influence of the wind and sun, the carnations transform into silver mirrors reflecting the Vendée sky. At sunset, the salt crystals sparkle like diamonds on the water's surface, offering a spectacle of shifting colors, from powdery pink to deep blue. It's the perfect time to stock up on good salt!

Maillezais Abbey

In the heart of the Marais Poitevin, in Maillezais, romantic ruins stand as if placed there to bear witness to the past. A beautiful visit is best enjoyed with a guide to better understand and appreciate the remains of this complex built by monks.

Let yourself be captivated by the majesty of its high, open-air vaults, where the stone seems to speak to the clouds. It's a film set, a cathedral of light reflected in the calm waters of the marsh, with an atmosphere of absolute serenity that only centuries can forge.

The House of the Master of the Dikes

Still in the Marais Poitevin, in Chaillé-les-Marais, you will learn about the drained marshland and how people organized themselves from the 17th century onwards to cultivate these submerged and seemingly hostile plots. Ingenuity, perseverance, and a tribute to the Master of the Dikes, the one who made all the decisions—a highly important role!

The visit immerses you in the intimacy of a 19th-century official residence, preserved in its original state, where the furniture and objects tell the story of the harsh yet fascinating daily lives of those who shaped this land. An authentic immersion, far from the beaten path, that pays tribute to the unsung heroes of the region.

The Zoo of Les Sables d'Olonne

An animal park to discover in one of the largest seaside resorts in Vendée and France, Les Sables-d'Olonne. 350 animals for the enjoyment of children, a human-scale zoo in a beautiful wooded environment.

Just steps from the ocean, this haven of biodiversity offers an enchanting escape in the shade of pines and holm oaks. Visitors can happily wander through this exotic garden where nature seems to have reclaimed its space, offering a moment of coolness and complete disconnection after a morning on the beach.
