The best things to do in Noirmoutier

1. Crossing the Passage du Gois in Vendée

To reach Noirmoutier Island, you have two options. The simplest is to cross the Noirmoutier bridge to Barbâtre and follow the coast. The second option, less frequently used and dependent on the tides, is the Passage du Gois, a legendary and surprising causeway between Noirmoutier Island and the mainland. Completely submerged, it can only be crossed at low tide, depending on the tidal coefficients, and offers a route of over 4 km on cobblestones. An unusual spot in the Vendée region, it's an ideal place for shellfish gathering and the starting point for the Foulées du Gois, a footrace held annually.

OYSTER FARMING, THE SEA-SCENTED SOUL OF NOIRMOUTIER ISLAND

It is impossible to truly experience the spirit of Noirmoutier without taking an interest in its ‘farmers of the sea’. Far more than just local production, oyster farming is a craft that shapes the bay’s landscapes with the ebb and flow of the tides. For a truly immersive experience, leave the beaches behind for a moment and step inside a farm: this is a unique opportunity to understand the work of the oyster farmers who tend their beds to produce an exceptional product.

A SKILL TO DISCOVER ON THE FORESHORE

The island’s coastline hides a fascinating natural laboratory where man and the ocean work together every day. By visiting the foreshore beds, discover the behind-the-scenes of the trade, from the traditional harvesting of young spat to the maturing process in the tidal pools. This hands-on experience allows you to put a face to these seafood delicacies and to grasp the importance of preserving this fragile ecosystem.

Oyster tasting in a hut: an authentic interlude

The journey ends with a treat for the senses in one of the many tasting huts dotted around the ports of Le Bonhomme or L’Épine. In these havens of peace, often decorated with driftwood, oysters are savoured in their simplest form: ultra-fresh, accompanied by a glass of local white wine and with a view of the horizon. This is where ‘slow tourism’ comes into its own, offering a convivial and gourmet break to share with family or friends, right next to the oyster beds.

And if you’d like to take some oysters and/or mussels home with you, head to one of the region’s many retail outlets.

2. Visit Butterfly Island on the island

You can't miss it: the Butterfly Island of Noirmoutier is the largest butterfly greenhouse in France. Experience an unforgettable day surrounded by colorful insects that roam freely in a 26°C greenhouse. From Guyana, Kenya, Madagascar, and Costa Rica, nearly 2,000 species from all corners of the world flutter and surround you with the tiny beating of their wings. The setting created to house these butterflies is magnificent, featuring a variety of flowers and plants. Whether with family or friends, the memories of Butterfly Island will be unforgettable.

Open to the public year-round, it houses collections that recount this historical past, such as the painting "The Death of General d'Elbée" by Julien Le Blant. Passionate about their craft, the salt workers toil every day in a natural landscape to obtain 100% natural salt, including coarse salt, fine salt, and fleur de sel.
