If you love historic buildings and want to discover what the Vendée region has to offer, look no further. The area has a turbulent past that has left behind numerous vestiges. The Vendée promises wonderful visits to castles, fortresses, palaces, and beautiful manor houses...

In the Middle Ages, the marshes were developed to promote agriculture, fishing, and salt production. The region's economic growth attracted covetous eyes. Territorial disputes between local lords led to the fortification of the area, which intensified during the Hundred Years' War. Beautiful castles were built there. In the 16th century, the Renaissance brought elegance and comfort to the old fortresses, transforming them into palaces. Unfortunately, the region also suffered heavy destruction during the Wars of Religion and the War in the Vendée. We invite you to explore the history of the Vendée through its castles.

Tiffauges Castle

The Château de Tiffauges is emblematic of the Vendée region. The site was fortified during the barbarian invasions, and the castle was later built in the 12th century by the lords of Thouars. It sheltered Gilles de Rais, Joan of Arc's comrade-in-arms, and witnessed the end of the Hundred Years' War. But Gilles de Rais is a legendary and mysterious figure, known as " Bluebeard "... Attacked, besieged, and burned during the Wars of Religion and the War in the Vendée, it has played a significant role in the history of the Vendée!

Today, Tiffauges Castle recounts its past and legends through shows and reenactments. These activities offer a better understanding of life in the Middle Ages, siege strategies, and combat training. They are very entertaining and popular with children. The ruins of this medieval fortress house the largest collection of war machines in Europe, and you can see them in operation!

Talmont Castle

Immerse yourself in a thousand-year-old epic by stepping through the gates of Talmont Castle, a medieval fortress whose stones still whisper the secrets of Richard the Lionheart. A true jewel of Vendée's heritage, this strategic site was the preferred residence of this legendary king, whose soul was far more rooted in the lands of Aquitaine than on the throne of England. While the imposing silhouette of the keep can be admired in every season, the castle comes alive with a unique fervor as soon as summer arrives: between immersive escape games, thrilling murder mystery parties, and workshops in ancestral skills, history becomes a captivating playground for young and old alike. To complete this immersive experience, as night falls, the ramparts serve as a backdrop for "The Epic of Richard the Lionheart," a masterful nighttime spectacle that resurrects the grandeur and torments of this knightly sovereign under the starry skies of Talmont.

Commequiers Castle

Let yourself be captivated by the unique silhouette of the Château de Commequiers, a feudal jewel whose imposing octagonal walls, flanked by eight massive stone towers, seem to literally float on its tranquil moat. While this stone colossus jealously guards its secrets by remaining closed to the public for the rest of the year, its architectural structure, unique in France, offers a breathtaking panorama that alone justifies the detour. The site awakens from its historical slumber, however, during the celebrations of July 14th and August 15th, special dates when the fortress exceptionally opens its doors to host grand, colorful medieval spectacles. A haven of peace the rest of the time, the surrounding park features a children's playground and verdant spaces, providing an idyllic setting for a bucolic family picnic at the foot of this majestic witness to the Vendée region's past.

Melusine's Tower

Majestically overlooking the village of Vouvant, the Mélusine Tower stands as the last and most prestigious vestige of the Lusignan castle, built in the 13th century. This cylindrical keep takes its name from the famous fairy builder, a mythical ancestor of the lineage, whose legend still permeates every stone of this thousand-year-old edifice. Exploring the picturesque streets and preserved ramparts of this medieval town, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, you will walk in the footsteps of knights of old. Climbing the tower offers a breathtaking reward: a sublime panoramic view of the meandering river and the verdant Vendée countryside, revealing all the wild poetry of this land steeped in mystery.

Apremont Castle

Overlooking the town with its imposing stature, the Château d'Apremont tells a fascinating architectural story, beginning in the 11th century as a strategic stronghold. Transformed into a sumptuous Renaissance residence under the patronage of Philippe Chabot de Brion, Admiral of France and childhood friend of Francis I, the building unfortunately suffered the ravages of time in the 18th century, leaving only its majestic ramparts and two iconic towers to our view today. These vestiges are nonetheless spectacular, particularly thanks to the castle terrace, which undoubtedly offers the most breathtaking panorama in the region, encompassing the Vie Valley in a single view. A true cultural center managed by the municipality, the site now comes alive with temporary exhibitions and themed events; a rich program that can be explored on the town's website to plan a visit amidst sky, stone, and history.

Saint-Mesmin Castle

The Château de Saint-Mesmin was built in the 14th century. Located in the Deux-Sèvres department, it is part of the eponymous commune a few kilometers away. To protect it, a massive tower was built in the 15th century. Despite its fortifications, it was designed as a family residence. Several prominent noble families resided there! It would not be until the War in the Vendée, which pitted royalists against revolutionaries, that it began to play a defensive role.

Though no longer inhabited, it remains very much alive and still echoes with children's laughter. From April to November, the Château de Saint-Mesmin becomes a children's kingdom. Stories, games, learning, and training are all on the agenda for these little princesses and young knights.
