Its history is long and rich, as this salt-making village was originally a hub for trade in salt, wheat, and wine, while neighboring boats deposited stones in the Vendée region to serve as ballast. These same stones were used to build the houses of the charming Port de la Guittière, which became an oyster-farming village in 1915. The mix of fresh and salt water in the Payré estuary is a boon for the producers, who cultivate delicate and fragrant oysters bearing the "Vendée Atlantique" label. To meet them, simply stroll along the port; they welcome you to their small huts along the channel, happy to offer you an oyster to taste.
