Pouzauges enjoys a privileged location in the Haut Bocage Vendéen. Situated at an altitude of almost 300 meters, it is one of the "highest" towns in the Vendée, and has long been known as the Queen of the Haut Bocage.
Its castle, a veritable fortress, overlooks the town and offers a splendid panorama of the bocage.
What remains of this ancient fortified castle is an 11th-century medieval keep that was built on these heights to see and be seen. A massive, square fortress, it can be visited all summer long, thanks to guided tours organized by the Tourist Office.
Pouzauges has been awarded the "Petite Cité de Caractère" label, which promotes the local heritage throughout the year.
Along the narrow streets, or venelles to be more precise, you'll discover this labyrinthine town. Pouzauges unveils itself slowly and progressively as you follow its winding, sometimes steep, alleys, discovering secret corners and ever more surprising viewpoints.
