Saint Michel Mont MercureHighest point in the Vendée
Saint Michel Mont Mercure is a must-see when visiting the heart of the Vendée bocage: at 290 meters above sea level at the foot of the church, this small commune is the highest point in the Vendée.
The church impresses visitors with the height of its bell tower.
You have to climb 199 steps to reach the top, 42 metres above the ground. The view of the typical landscapes of the Vendée bocage is exceptional.
The golden statue of the archangel Saint Michel dominates the top of the bell tower and is the pride of its inhabitants. This statue is an exact replica of the one created for the Notre Dame de Fourvière basilica in Lyon at the end of the 19th century (for the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris). It depicts the archangel Saint Michael slaying the dragon, and sparkles in its brilliant gold color.
