The Vendée is not just a department of beaches and marshes : it is also a land steeped in history, marked by some of the most dramatic events of the French Revolution, by a centuries-old maritime tradition, and by a rich rural heritage. With more than 70 museums scattered throughout the region, from Les Sables-d'Olonne to the Île d'Yeu, including the inland bocage countryside, the department abounds with fascinating places to visit for curious minds of all ages. Ready to leave the beach for a while and enrich yourself intellectually?
If you only have time to visit one cultural site in the Vendée, this should be it. Nestled in the heart of the natural Boulogne Valley in Les Lucs-sur-Boulogne, in a contemporary building with a green roof that blends almost entirely into the landscape, the Historial de la Vendée offers a journey through 7,000 years of history, from geology and prehistory to the 20th century, including Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and of course, the terrible Wars of the Vendée. The museum's design is decidedly modern and interactive : life-size reconstructions, touchscreens, and immersive projections. Families will particularly enjoy the Children's Museum, a playful space designed for toddlers as young as two, which regularly changes its theme.
Just a short walk away, the Vendée Memorial completes the visit with a very different tone: it is a place of reflection, sober and silent, built in homage to the 564 civilians massacred at Les Lucs-sur-Boulogne on February 28, 1794, by Republican columns. Inaugurated in 1993 by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, it has also become a universal memorial dedicated to the victims of all totalitarian regimes. The visit naturally continues along the "Path of Remembrance," which leads to the Petit-Luc Chapel where the names of the victims are engraved.
The two sites are separate but complementary, and a single entrance ticket grants access to both. Allow half a day to fully enjoy both spaces, with a possible break at the Café de l'Historial on site.

On the road to the castles, in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire, the Vendée Automobile Museum appeals to both car enthusiasts and families looking for a unique outing. The collection includes dozens of vintage vehicles, from early internal combustion engine cars to racing machines, as well as vintage motorcycles and mopeds that will delight those with a taste for nostalgia. What distinguishes this museum from a simple static display is the care taken to provide historical context: each vehicle is presented with its history, manufacturer, and era, allowing visitors to understand the evolution of the automobile alongside that of French society.
It is also a visit that works very well as a complement to a day devoted to the medieval heritage of the town, since the Château de Talmont-Saint-Hilaire is located in the immediate vicinity, with its chivalry displays and falconry shows in high season.

Embarking on a journey to the Île d'Yeu is an adventure in itself. Once there, in Port-Joinville, the Fishing and Sea Rescue Museum recounts, with great sincerity, the history of a community entirely shaped by the ocean. The collections trace traditional fishing techniques, the great tuna fishing campaigns that made the island famous, and the eventful history of sea rescue, with its share of storms, shipwrecks, and acts of courage by volunteer rescuers. Visitors will discover model boats, sailors' tools, period photographs, and personal accounts that give a human dimension to this museum, modest in size but rich in emotion.

To understand the daily life of Vendée residents of yesteryear, head to the Museum of Popular Traditions in Les Sables-d'Olonne. Embroidered regional costumes, traditional headdresses, agricultural and fishing tools, and reconstructions of period interiors : this intimate museum unfolds, room after room, the thread of a popular memory that remains very much alive in the department. Visitors will learn about the specific characteristics of Vendée costume according to the different regions of the department, the customs associated with major local festivals, as well as the lost skills and trades that once shaped life in Les Sables-d'Olonne and its surroundings.
It is a museum particularly appreciated by visitors curious about local history and intangible heritage, and which complements very well a shopping trip in the historic center of Les Sables, discovering the alleys of the Chaume district.

Head to the Breton-Vendée marshlands to discover a type of dwelling unique in France: the bourrine. This ecomuseum faithfully recreates a traditional marsh cottage, built of cob and topped with a reed roof, just like those found in the region until the mid-20th century. The visit, accompanied by an interactive multimedia area, allows you to understand how the inhabitants of the marshland adapted to this very particular environment, between water, land, and reeds: agriculture, livestock farming, net fishing, domestic life... Everything is recreated with great attention to authenticity, including period furniture.
It's an ideal outing for families on holiday on the Côte de Lumière, halfway between cultural discovery and immersion in a still preserved natural landscape, a stone's throw from the beaches of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez.

A museum with a radically different atmosphere, perfect for 20th-century history enthusiasts. Carved directly into the dune by the German army during World War II, this bunker served as a first-aid post for the occupying troops. Transformed into a museum, the Blockhaus Hospital offers a striking glimpse into the daily military life of the time: a reconstructed operating room, original medical equipment, and period uniforms and gear. The deliberately understated yet immersive design prioritizes historical accuracy over spectacle, making it a memorable visit, especially for teenagers interested in this era.
Best suited for slightly older children, as the visit can be overwhelming for younger ones.

Located in the superb Sainte-Croix Abbey in the heart of Les Sables-d'Olonne, the MASC (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) is a national reference for art lovers, with major collections devoted to Gaston Chaissac and Victor Braune, as well as works by Dubuffet, Marquet or Peter Saul.
Please note: the museum is currently closed for a major renovation, scheduled for completion in 2028. While awaiting its reopening, the MASC offers an "off-site" cultural program (exhibitions at other locations, lectures, and artist talks) which you can follow on the museum's social media channels if you're a contemporary art enthusiast. A great place to keep in mind for your future trips to the Vendée region.
