The Bessay Castle is a 16th century building, which replaced the old fortifications of what is called a “feudal motte” In the Middle Ages, it was a mound, which occupied a dominant position on a valley and which would protect a small town, thanks to defensive wooden constructions. Subsequently, dungeons, surrounded by stone walls, were installed there, before becoming part of real fortresses. During the Renaissance, their military function no longer being required, most were transformed into more comfortable residences. This is the case of the Bessay Castle, whose main building, fitted out in the 17th and 18th centuries, is accessible to visitors.
