Seafood and fish restaurants: some must-try spots in Vendée
The Vendée is a region rich in specialties, one of which remains its fish and seafood. Ideally located along the Atlantic coast with its 250 km of shoreline, it allows gourmets to feast on the treasures of the sea all year round. Discover all these briny delicacies in the seafood restaurants of the Vendée.
Seafood and fish, the heart of gastronomy in Vendée
The sea is an incredible source of fish, shellfish, seafood, and crustaceans —ingredients enjoyed raw, cooked, with a sauce, or simply marinated. Mussels and fries in summer, seafood platters at Christmas, or shrimp mayonnaise any time of year—the choice is yours. In the Vendée region, restaurateurs readily offer ocean-inspired dishes on their menus, featuring typical local products.
- The sardines from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie are a pure delight to enjoy grilled. This first wild fish to be awarded the Label Rouge is celebrated every year with a festival called "the spring of the sardine".
- Bouchot mussels are cultivated in the Bay of Aiguillon on oak stakes planted in the water, using the Bouchot method. Beyond their delicious taste, they also offer a beautiful view from the beach at low tide.
- The Sablaise, the Vendée sole, caught off the coast of Les Sables-d'Olonne, is delicious cooked meunière style.
- Vendée Atlantique oysters are raised at sea and then refined in oyster beds, offering a delicious briny taste that has earned them several medals at the agricultural show. Whether from Talmont-Saint-Hilaire, Noirmoutier-en-l'Ile, or the bay of Aiguillon-sur-Mer, they can be enjoyed fresh or au gratin.
Hake, turbot, whiting, pollack, mackerel, tuna, sea bass, crabs, langoustines, prawns, squid, cuttlefish or calamari, there are still many briny surprises to discover in Vendée!
Seafood and fish restaurants in Vendée, chefs who respect the seasons
Seafood products are living organisms that follow a very specific production cycle depending on the species. This is why restaurants adapt their menus throughout the year according to seasonality and fishing regulations. To help you navigate this and learn about the briny delights you can enjoy, here is a non-exhaustive calendar of seafood and fish.
- In spring, it's the peak season for pollack and seafood, so you can enjoy platters of shrimp, whelks, oysters, langoustines and crabs with a glass of chilled white wine.
- In summer, mussels are the stars of the plate, along with sardines, mackerel, tuna, shrimp or turbot.
- In autumn, the sea bass season begins, not forgetting the sardines, mussels, shrimp and lobsters which remain available.
- Winter is synonymous with scallops, but not only. Mussels, oysters and seafood also grace the tables at the end of the year, festive dishes most often enjoyed at Christmas and New Year.
