Getting to Vendée

Automatic translation

Coming to the Vendée department on vacation is easy. It is an extremely well served destination and La Roche-sur-Yon is a “ hub ” area (a node). You are only 3 hours from the capital by train and close to a major road network but also rail and why not maritime!

By plane there are two main airports to reach the Vendée! La Rochelle airport and Nantes airport. There are direct domestic flights, but also international flights. Consult the websites of these airports.

By train, the major stations in the Vendée which host TGV connections are La Roche-sur-Yon and Les Sables d'Olonne. There are secondary stations for regional trains at Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, Challans, Luçon, Montaigu. From there, you only need to rent a car or take the buses to reach on one side the towns inland or the main seaside resorts, from which you can then travel by bus or even by bicycle.

By road, here are the main roads that allow you to reach Vendée by car:

  • The A83, passes in the middle / east of the department, near Fontenay le Comte.
  • The A87 then connects to La Roche sur Yon and further to Les Sables d 'Olonne, then taking the D160.
  • The D38 runs along the coast, to go from one seaside resort to another.
  • Transversely, it is the D94 that must be taken, to navigate around the Marais Poitevin and the D753 which meanders with the Loire Atlantique in the north of the Vendée.
  • The department is well provided with departmental roads which are of good quality and rather " straight ". The department is also quite flat, except in the northeast, but it is not the Alps!

Coming to Vendée by bus is possible, there are many departmental and regional bus lines. See this link to Aleop Pays de la Loire (in french) to find out more.

Also think about carpooling to come to Vendée if you are alone or as a couple, a little backpacker...

Once there, if you are on the coast, we can only recommend, depending on your family composition, to rent bikes to walk around in peace. Many cycle paths that secure this means of transport and it is so pleasant in summer! No more traffic problems or worrying about parking. With a surfboard it's not easy, but the beach bag slips in the back!

Read our article on the great bike routes of the Vendée, so as not to hesitate for a single second to bring the little queen with you, or to rent and take beautiful rides on two wheels.

If you are on holiday in the Breton or Poitevin Marshes or in the countryside, it will be more difficult to get around without a car… The points of interest can be far away and within a radius of 30 minutes by car, if you like to go to the discovery of the territory. You can also come by public transport and then rent a car to explore the area.

The boat is not really a means of transport, even if it is essential to go to the island of Yeu (the island of Noirmoutier also, but it benefits from a road connection, unlike the island of Yeu). On the other hand, you can take very beautiful boat trips from Fromentine, Saint-Gilles, la Barbâtre. We also take trips from Aiguillon, Les Sables, Talmont, La Tranche sur mer… Experience the Vendée on the sea side, like the skippers of the Vendée Globe!
